As the piranhas begin to attack people in the lake, a group of survivors must band together to stop them. The group includes Richard Latcherry (Adam Scott), a wealthy businessman; Christian (Casper Zauber), a lake caretaker; and Claudia (Elisabeth Shue), a scientist.
The movie begins with a group of American tourists on a boat trip in the Amazon River. While swimming in the river, one of the tourists is attacked by a piranha, which is then caught by a fisherman. The fisherman takes the piranha to a lake in Arizona, where it is released into the water.
