It is widely considered one of the best action sequences in independent comics of the last decade. In the world of Vex, the only time a person is truly free is when they are at the precipice of death.

The story follows , a mute former champion snowboarder, and Rook , a cynical drone mechanic. They lead a crew of "Conditioners"—extreme athletes now turned scavengers—on a pilgrimage across the dead continents to ride the Terminus Wave before a militaristic cult known as "The Flatline" captures the energy of the storm to power a mind-control satellite.

The comic argues that extreme sports are a form of meditation. In Issue #12, the antagonist—a zen nihilist named "The Accountant"—delivers a monologue while windsurfing a toxic slime river: "You are not chasing the thrill. You are chasing the silence between your heartbeats."
