If you are an aspiring artist, try this exercise: Go into the field with one lens (preferably a prime lens, like a 50mm or 85mm) and treat the forest as a portrait studio. Look for shapes, shadows, and silhouettes. Turn the animal into a shape first, and a subject second. Here lies the most critical function of wildlife photography and nature art : Conservation.

These artists succeed because they ask, "What is this scene trying to say?" rather than "What species is this?"
